Katy Kearson was raised in Jacksonville, graduated from Jacksonville University with a B.S. and M.A.T. In Elementary Education, and taught over four decades in Duval County. Positions held included classroom teacher, Title I teacher, literacy coach and coordinator, and assistant principal. During this time she was appointed a position with America’s Choice, was testing coordinator, Kearson received the B’nai B’brith Humanitarian Award, and served as President of the Duval Reading Council (although she says her greatest achievement was raising my two sons, who are the joy of her life.)
In 2011 Kearson was diagnosed with breast cancer which led to her retirement. This opened up a whole world of opportunities including activities at her church, OPUMC, book clubs, and Orange Park Woman’s Club. She says she finds her participation with the Shepherd’s Center of Orange Park is the most rewarding.
“A friend introduced me to the classes and I was hooked,” Kearson said. “The Shepherd’s Center has provided an opportunity of community, volunteerism, and classes to continue my learning. Serving on the board has taught me what goes into keeping the organization vital and current to provide for our members. I am loving my life.”
